Knowing how to apply eyeshadow has proven to be more difficult than we could have ever imagined. It almost seems as though we would need all the fine art lessons from secondary school to get it right. Sometimes, irrespective of how knowledgeable you are of colours, knowing how to apply eyeshadow still seems hard. But, hopefully we can change that today.
Now, when it comes to makeup, very few rules stand true. When you think of it, makeup, just like beauty, is relative and personal. You can literally pick bold or neutral colors, no one is going to hold your trousers. It really is up to you. But just like everything in life, there are a few standing rules that must apply.

So, just in case you’re just starting out in the makeup game and want to know how to apply eyeshadow, we’ve got some tips.

1. ALWAYS USE A PRIMER:

Applying a primer before your eyeshadow is one of the 10 commandments of makeup. Primers reduce creasing and breakage and helps your eyeshadow last for eons. Now, if you can’t get your hands on a primer, use a concealer instead. However, ensure the concealer is matte for a longer lasting wear.

2. DON’T FORGER TO SET THE PRIMER:

Immediately after you apply a primer, set it with some powder. We would recommend some loose powder to get the job done. Setting the primer creates a better base for your eyeshadow application. However, if you want more pop on your mobile lid, leave the primer/concealer bare and pat on the shadow.

3. KNOW THE PARTS OF YOUR EYE:

A lot of the time, we get confused when it comes to naming parts of the eye. Lots of people mix up eyelashes & eyebrows and the inner and outer crease. It’s totally normal. But if you want to be a pro at eyeshadow application, you might want a refresher course. Take a look at the diagram below so you know what’s what!

4. USE A TRANSITION COLOUR: If you’re going to use more than 1 color of eyeshadow, a transition colour is very important. It helps you build the colours and blend them together for a more natural finish. A rule of thumb is that transition colours should be lighter than the main colour. So, when applying the shadow place the transition colour in your crease and blend out.

Another rule to remember is that transition colours are meant to be close to your skin tone. If you’re using a blue shadow as a main shadow, use a lighter shade of blue for the transition.

To get it right, just look out for the general names. Look out for the blending, shading, angled brushes that are easy to pick out and tell you exactly what they’re for.
